ECommerce

What is e-commerce?

E-commerce is the ability to sell products or services online.

What is an eCommerce website merchant account?

A merchant account is the bank account that tracks and transfers all of the monetary transactions that occur through your website. Your first step in building your e-commerce site is setting up a merchant account with a provider.

What are my options for e-commerce?

You can take payments online in a number of ways. The first is PayPal, an inexpensive way to start taking payments quickly. With PayPal, your visitors can pay with a credit card or by sending a payment from their checking account. PayPal provides a shopping cart and many other free services that are helpful to sites that are starting out. They charge 2.9% plus $.30 per transaction and have no start-up fees. PayPal, however, is not a very customizable solution, and it can have a “start-up” feel. However, this is changing and many mainstream sites are now accepting PayPal as more and more people have PayPal accounts. PayPal provides a very easy way to integrate a shopping cart into your site, which reduces development time.

There is also the option of creating a full e-commerce solution. This involves many different components – a merchant account from a bank, a payment gateway service that allows you to accept payments into your merchant account from your website, a shopping cart or payment script that integrates with your payment gateway, and certain elements of the server environment like having an SSL certificate and a static IP. Full e-commerce is much more expensive and time-consuming to develop than PayPal, but it can be integrated into your site for a truly seamless payment experience. It can also save you money in the long run if you are doing a lot of sales.

What is meant by “web presence”?

The web presence of a business is the complete digital footprint of a business found on the Internet. While the website and the written, video and graphical content it contains is the cornerstone of a company’s web presence.

Why does my business need a growing web presence?

Building a growing web presence will your business help reach more new customers and prospects while increasing contact with existing customers. Your competitors are growing their web presence, so if you aren’t growing yours then you are falling behind. A growing web presence also helps develops trust and authority for customers and prospects. The more places people see you the bigger and more familiar you are in their minds. In addition, a broader web presence will also frequently enhance search engine rankings for many of the same reasons.

What is S.E.O ?

Definitions of SEO can vary but many of the core concepts are consistent. According to Wikipedia:

“Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engine’s “natural” or un-paid (“organic”) search results. In general, the earlier (or higher ranked on the search results page), and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine’s users. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, video search, academic search, news search and industry-specific vertical search engines.”

Why do I need SEO for my business?

Search engine optimization is an essential component of a business’s marketing and sales strategy. With the rise and rapid growth of the Internet and the demise of many traditional (offline) channels to reach customers and prospects such as the Yellow Pages, having a web presence has become increasingly important if not vital.

Reasons for developing and implementing a clear SEO and web presence strategy include:

To optimize your web presence and visibility.

To build better branding and positioning for your business, products and services.

To increase the online credibility and trust for your business.

To identify a business’ most effective keywords.

To rank higher in the search engines.

To increase traffic from potential customers.

To increase the number of repeat visitors and customers.

To Grow Your Business – $$$

The goals, project scope and budget for search engine optimization and growing a web presence can vary significantly for different businesses. However, the need and importance for having an optimized web presence will only grow over time. At the end of the day, if your customers and potential customers are not finding you on the Internet they are finding your competitors.

What are Keywords?

Keywords and keyword phrases are a central element of search engine optimization. In its most basic definition a keyword or keyword phrase is the text a web user types into a search box to find relevant information or content. Phrased another way, keywords are descriptions of the information people are searching for and can bring targeted traffic to your website.

What is Local Search?

Local Search is the use of a geographic tag, such as a state, city, or zip code as part of the search phrase when performing a search. Local search is an efficient way for a search engines to deliver relevant, results for businesses, products and services within a limited geographic area. An example of a local search, also referred to as Local SEO, would be entering “Chinese restaurant Lagos” into the search box on Google, Bing or Yahoo.

Google, Bing and Yahoo all have services that allow local business owners to create a business listing online with the most accurate, up to date information about their business, products and services. These listing will generally include a link to the businesses website, their phone number and a map showing the business location.

Why do Search Engine Rankings Change Frequently?

The Web is a dynamic place and the search engine results pages (SERPs) can change on a frequent basis. This can be frustrating to website owners as one day they may rank number 2 for an important keyword phrase and two days later they may rank number 10.

There are a number of factors that affect the rankings for a given web page and a given keyword on any given day. These can include:

New sites, web pages and content are discovered by the search engines on a daily basis and may jump ahead of existing pages in the rankings.

Older sites, web pages and content can be taken offline (removed from the web), or decrease in relevancy due to content that is unchanged or seldom visited over a long period.

Older sites and web pages are upgraded or enhanced (SEO) to make their content more attractive to visitors and to the search engines.

The search engines can change how they evaluate websites, web pages, content and links, which can result in the rank of a given page for a given keyword falling or rising without any changes by the website owner.

How much do SEO and Web Presence services cost?

A common question the cost of our services will depend upon the needs of a client. We work with a wide range of businesses and the needs, requirements, desired results and budget can vary. A few of the parameters that are evaluated as part of a business engagement include:

How many keywords would you like to target?

What is your existing web presence?

What is the commitment level?

How active has your business been in social media? Email marketing? Content creation? Video marketing?

What are search engine spiders and why does my website need to be ‘crawled’?

Spiders are intelligent software programmes that search engines use to visit, crawl and index millions of web pages throughout the World Wide Web. Web pages are then stored within large search engine “data centers”, ready to be presented within search engine results pages when humans enter a search term that relates to the pages. To be fully crawled and indexed by search engines, web pages must be developed using clean validated coding

Why is website navigation and usability important to my website?

When website visitors land on your pages, you have up to 8 seconds to convince them to stay and take action. Fail the 8 second test and you can kiss them goodbye! How long do you remain on websites that are boring, un-engaging and hard to navigate or use? Regardless of how highly your website is ranked in search engines, your website must engage them, speak their language and convert them from visitors to action takers.

What is the difference between white-hat and black-hat search engine optimization techniques?

White-hat (or ethical) search engine optimization uses techniques and methods recommended by all the major search engines to gain high rankings and online visibility. Black-hat practices are condemned by all major search engines and the use of them can result in websites being heavily penalized (resulting in low rankings), or complete deletion from the search engine indexes.

What are ‘landing pages’ and ‘calls to action’?

Landing pages are single-purpose web pages designed to entice visitors to take immediate action by downloading, requesting, subscribing or purchasing something. The term ‘call to action’ refers to a method used to entices website visitors to perform specific actions: subscribing to your online newsletter, contacting you, submitting an inquiry form, requesting a quote or downloading useful information (such as white papers etc). Landing page optimization and ‘call to action’ implementation are crucial to getting visitors to take action on your website.

Can Pay Per Click advertising really help our business?

Pay Per Click advertising lets small business owners promote their products, goods and services through text adverts within search engine sponsored listings –found at the top and right of organic (or natural) search engine results listings. Advertisers set a daily limit on what they are prepared to spend and are then charged every time their advert is clicked.

The actual cost per click is determined by the position of their advert, the cost of the keyword that triggered their advert to appear and the search engine’s quality score of their click-through-ratio (CTR). In business terms, this is the fastest, most cost-effective way for your company to attract new customers online.

We want to know how our website visitors behave?

Tracking, understanding and monitoring website visitor behavior is fundamental to the success of your website promotion activities. Implementing Website Visitor Reporting & Analytics will help you understand how new and existing customers behave when they are on your website.

Online Marketing

What is Social Media?

According to Doreen Moran, a digital and social marketing strategist, “Social media is a collection of online platforms and tools that people use to share content, profiles, opinions, insights, experiences, perspectives and media itself, facilitating conversations and interactions online between groups of people.

Social Media is the platform/tools.

Social Networking is the act of connecting on social media platforms.

Social Media Marketing is how businesses join the conversation in an authentic and transparent way to build relationships.

Can social media marketing really help my business?

Yes it can, In fact, not utilizing social media marketing can actually harm your business, since having an online presence on social media is simply expected of any reputable firm these days.

What are the benefits of social media marketing for my company?

Whether your business is taking advantage of it or not, social media has forever changed the way that consumers communicate with businesses, and vice versa. Being accessible to your customers and your prospective clients via social media is a vital means of developing relationships with them and helping them through the sales funnel.

How should companies measure their social media marketing success?

Success is measured using the same metrics you use for any other marketing activity: traffic, leads, and customers. Counting the number of fans or followers you have can help you understand your social media reach, but the bottom line that determines its success is how many people it drives to your site, how many of them are qualified leads, and how many of them actually become customers

How much does social media marketing cost? What’s the ROI?

Social media marketing is never free. Whether you’re spending your own valuable time on it, asking an employee to add it to their workload, hiring a social media employee, or outsourcing to a marketing firm, there is always a cost. The key is to get the maximum ROI out of the time or money you put into it.

It’s important to remember, however, that ROI doesn’t have to mean revenue. It can, but it can also mean meeting other objectives, such as getting new leads, increasing email subscriptions, or even boosting customer satisfaction. The ROI you end up with is the direct result of how focused your social media marketing strategy is.

Which social media platforms should my business have a presence on?

There is no definite answer to this question, because you need to have a presence wherever your customers are – and different businesses have different audiences. One demographic spends most of their time on Facebook, while another really only engages on LinkedIn, and some divide their time equally between three or more sites. Find out where your customers are, and follow them there.

Does my company really need a blog for social media marketing?

Yes! A blog is one of those non-negotiable. Apart from all of the benefits it provides on its own, such as increasing your credibility as an industry expert, and providing fresh, keyword-rich content on a regular basis to please the search engines, a blog is a vital component of social media marketing. One of the most effective types of content to post on social media is a link to a blog post.

Is social media marketing better for B2C or B2B businesses?

It’s important for both, but in different ways. While B2C businesses can focus on more light-hearted, fun social media posts, B2B businesses need to use social media to share valuable industry content.

How long does it take before I’ll start seeing results from social media marketing?

With social media constantly evolving, this depends on variables such as the time and effort you’re putting into social media marketing management, your budget, your audience, your strategy, and whether you’re using paid ads or not. Regardless, it’s important to remember that social media is a marathon and not a race

What are some common social media marketing mistakes business make?

One of the worst mistakes is inconsistency – only posting sporadically, and not responding when consumers reach out to engage. Another biggie is using social media as a place to announce your own content and nothing more, without ever engaging in discussions or adding comments to the post that make your audience want to click or like or share.

What are some general tips for social media success?

Post consistently. Let your passion and personality shine through. Engage in conversations. Answer questions. Encourage audience engagement. Provide valuable content freely, without selling and be creative.

Is email marketing still effective?

Email marketing is one of the most effective ways for a business to reach customers directly. Think about it. You’re not posting something on your site and hoping people will visit it. You’re not even posting something on a social media page and hoping fans will see it. You’re sending something directly into each person’s inbox, where they definitely will see it! Even if they don’t open it, they’ll still see the subject line and your company’s name each time you send an email, so you’re always communicating directly with your audience.

Isn’t social media marketing taking the place of email marketing?

Actually, statistics show that email reaches three times more people than Facebook and Twitter combined. That’s a significant difference. Social media marketing is wildly popular, and becoming even more so every day, but it is definitely not taking the place of social media marketing any time soon.

On Facebook, for example, each post only reaches a small portion of your users. If you have users opted into your email list, however, everyone on that list will receive that message.

Can I buy a list when I’m just starting out with email marketing?

It can be tempting, but you’ve got to resist that temptation. The only way to get an email subscriber list that will be beneficial to your company is to grow it organically. First of all, many email service providers won’t even allow you to use purchased lists. And secondly, the email addresses found on lists like those are not high-quality leads, to say the least.

They will not contain people truly interested in your products or services, since these people didn’t opt-in to your specific email list, so they’ll also be much more likely to mark your emails as spam.

How should I grow my subscriber list?

The best way to grow an email subscriber list is to offer your audience an incentive in exchange for signing up to receive your emails. You can put this offer on your site, on your social media pages, on landing pages you create to get people excited – just get the word out, and your leads will automatically qualify themselves by opting in.

What makes a good incentive?

Any kind of content that will be seen as valuable by your particular audience. It can be an eBook, a white paper, a video, a webinar, even a coupon – anything that is attractive enough to potential customers that they are willing to give up their email address in order to get it.

How often should I send marketing emails?

As often as you can, without annoying your clients.

What does the CAN-SPAM law say?

This law requires anyone sending commercial emails to include an unsubscribe link within each one, include the company’s physical address or P.O. Box as well, and to honor any subscriber’s request to unsubscribe by never emailing them again

What is content marketing exactly?

Content marketing turns traditional marketing on its head. Instead of focusing on a company and its products or services, it focuses on the consumer’s needs first. The goal of content marketing is to provide valuable, genuinely helpful information to consumers for free, in order to create a relationship with them based on trust, which eventually leads them to make a purchase.

What qualifies as content?

When most people think of content marketing, they think of a blog. And blogs are certainly one of the easiest and most effective means of content marketing available. But they aren’t the only forms of content that can be employed in a content marketing strategy. Any valuable information, conveyed via any medium, can be considered content. Videos, info-graphics, slide-shares, PDFs, blogs, articles, podcasts, white papers, eBooks, webinars – the list goes on and on.

How should I get started with content marketing?

Though it can be tempting to jump right in and start writing a blog without much forethought, the only way to ensure that your content marketing will be effective is to take the time to create a strategy first. Without a clear plan in place, all the time you put into developing content is wasted.

What are the steps to developing a content marketing strategy?

First, determine who your target audience is. Develop a customer persona to whom your content should speak. Then, based on that persona and your company’s brand image, decide on your company’s voice, and the type of content you will be creating. Your content needs to be informative and valuable, as well as interesting and engaging, to your target demographic. And once you start producing content, constant tweaking of your strategy is in order, based on how successful each post is.

How often should I post fresh content on my site?

There is still a lot of debate surrounding this question – every industry and every demographic sees different content consumption patterns. But in general, fresh content should be posted no less often than twice a week. As for an upper limit, there is none – studies seem to show that posting once a day, or even several times a day, is a very effective way to drive traffic to a website. It’s just a matter of deciding how much time and effort you can devote to creating content. Google is known to give more prominence to websites that update their data on a frequent basis

How important is it to share my content on social media?

It’s not important – it’s essential. Posting content to a blog and then sitting back and hoping that visitors will find it is an exercise in futility. In fact, some blogging gurus maintain that only 20% of your time should be spent on content creation, and the other 80% on promoting that content via social media! It’s that vital.

Is guest blogging part of a content marketing strategy?

Yes! Content creation is content creation, whether it’ll appear on your site or someone else’s. Of course, guest blogging is also an essential part of outreach or digital PR, but the principles of content marketing still apply – you must create valuable information that will help consumers.

How important are keywords in content marketing?

Despite the constant changes to Google’s algorithm, keywords are still important in content creation. While the standards have been somewhat relaxed, so that words and phrases that mean approximately the same thing as the exact phrase searched for can now pop up in search results, too, it’s still best to include a few mentions of the exact words and phrases you want to be found for. Just remember that your priority is always to write for humans, not search engines.

How can content marketing make me into an industry thought leader?

There’s a lot of talk about the importance of becoming a thought leader – and with good reason. Getting you known as an expert in your field is exactly what content marketing is meant to do. It’s what creates the sense of trust in consumers, which allows them to feel comfortable making a purchase from you.

By creating unique, original content, in which you demonstrate your expertise and answer questions consumers might have, you’ll be on your way to becoming an industry thought leader in no time.

How can I create content that converts?

It’s important to remember that content marketing is just one step in the conversion funnel. It’s only through a combination of SEO, content marketing, social media marketing, outreach, email marketing, and website design that prospective customers are led to convert.

What are some common content marketing mistakes?

The most common content marketing mistake is to fall back into the old habits of traditional marketing. Writing blog posts that are overly salesy, or that promote the company and its products excessively, is a big no-no. Content should be valuable to consumers, and sales pitches are not only not valuable – they’re off-putting. There’s a time and a place for sales, and it’s not in your content.
